Layer and pour limitsRiver/slab ≤2 in; smaller mold ≤3 in and ≤1 mixed gallon. Avoid <1 in.
Working and curing contextWorking 4–6 h mass-dependent. Demold ≥48 h deeper/larger; ≥72 h smaller, only firm. Recoat conservative ≥36 h; accelerated ≥24 h, center <85°F and firm. Full cure differs between the linked technical sheet (5–7 days) and current product data (5–10 days). Confirm the schedule for the exact kit and pour conditions before finishing or full service.

Fathom: allow for the delayed heat and long finishing schedule

Fathom's slow reaction gives a maker time to place inclusions and organize a substantial casting. That same behavior makes it a poor default for a thin seal coat or a tiny craft mold. TotalBoat advises using another suitable epoxy to seal porous wood before the deep pour.

The main depth limits are two inches for river or slab pours and three inches for a smaller mold holding no more than one mixed gallon. A short initial period without obvious heat does not establish that a pour is under control: the technical sheet describes noticeable heat developing six to twenty hours after mixing.

Budget conservatively for finishing. The linked technical sheet gives five to seven days for full cure, while the product page says five to ten. Treat that disagreement as a reason to check the current kit guidance, rather than selecting the faster number for a deadline.

Plan the measuring and mixing stage

Drill permitted: 2–3 min; transfer; 2–3 min; instructed 20–30 min rest.

Minimum pour volume 1/2 gallon recommended; not a universal maximum.

Allow for the whole cure schedule

Working 4–6 h mass-dependent.

Working time, demolding and full service are separate decisions. Record room conditions and actual mixed quantity in your project notes, and do not use a hard surface alone as proof of complete cure.

Limitations & open questions

  • TDS full cure 5–7 d; product technical data 5–10 d.
  • Do not substitute heat-deflection values for hot-object service limits.

A depth ceiling is only one condition. Verify total mixed mass, geometry, temperature and the exact kit revision before planning a pour. A smaller package of the same formula does not automatically change its operating limits.
