Begin with the intended use

Food-contact suitability is a question about a particular material under particular conditions. Write down what food or drink will contact the piece, whether contact is brief or prolonged, the expected temperature, and how the object will be cleaned. A decorative tray holding plates presents a different material question from a bowl containing hot soup.

Include wear in your project description. Cutting, scraping and repeated cleaning are separate demands from simply placing a dry snack on a surface. A resin that is documented for one contact scenario is not automatically appropriate for knives, hot cookware, beverage storage or a dishwasher.

Ask for the supporting documentation

Look for a manufacturer statement that identifies the exact resin and hardener, the basis of the claim, and applicable restrictions. A seller’s phrase such as food safe is not a complete specification. Keep the relevant document with the product identity and revision information so you can check whether it applies to the material you purchased.

FDA explains that food-contact authorizations address intended uses and conditions. Its food-contact notification system can also be specific to the notifying manufacturer or supplier. A general reference to FDA rules therefore does not establish that an unspecified craft resin or a homemade finished article is approved for every use.

Evaluate the whole material system

Your object may include pigments, alcohol inks, glitter, botanical inclusions, sealants, adhesives and a final coating. Ask whether the resin manufacturer’s documentation covers those additions and their loading. A statement about a clear, unmodified product cannot simply be extended to every decorative formulation.

Make the description match what you know

For a decorative piece, state its decorative purpose and use separate dishes or containers for food where appropriate. For a piece supported for a specific contact use, give concise instructions that preserve those conditions. Avoid broader claims such as safe for all foods, heatproof or dishwasher safe unless each one is substantiated for the complete item.
