Start with the exact products
Read the safety data sheet for both resin and hardener, plus the manufacturer’s application instructions. The two components can have different hazards. Also check pigments, cleaners, adhesives and finishing products in your process. An absence of strong odor does not establish that exposure is harmless.

This guide is a planning aid for small craft projects; it does not replace product instructions or workplace exposure assessment. If you are running a business, determine the requirements that apply to your work and waste stream.
Prevent contact and control the workspace
CDC/NIOSH identifies epoxy resins among chemicals that can cause allergic contact dermatitis. Avoid repeated skin contact, including contact through contaminated tools, bottle surfaces and clothing. Choose protective gloves and clothing suitable for the specific chemicals and task, following the SDS and glove manufacturer’s compatibility guidance.
Wear appropriate eye protection and provide the ventilation required by the products and process. Keep food, drinks, children and pets away from the work area. Set out clean supplies where you can reach them without touching household surfaces with contaminated gloves. Replace damaged or contaminated protection rather than continuing with resin on it.

Know the product’s first-aid instructions before opening containers. For exposure, follow those instructions promptly and obtain medical or poison-control advice as appropriate. Do not use solvent to clean epoxy from skin. If symptoms develop, stop exposure and seek professional advice rather than testing your tolerance with another project.
Prepare the specified spill materials and a suitable waste container. Keep spills out of drains and waterways. Sanding creates a separate exposure route, especially while epoxy is only partially cured. Follow the required cure stage and use appropriate dust collection and protective measures; a surface that feels firm is not automatically fully cured.
Respect reaction heat
Mixed epoxy can become dangerously hot in a concentrated mass. Observe the manufacturer’s batch size, container and layer restrictions, and arrange the work so mixed material is applied within the approved process. Do not accumulate leftover reactive material in a deep container or combine unknown wastes.
Have a response plan based on the SDS and manufacturer guidance. If material overheats, smokes or creates an immediate hazard, keep people away and seek emergency assistance when needed. Do not pick up a dangerously hot container or improvise a chemical addition to stop the reaction. Preventing an oversized or unsuitable batch is the primary control.
Store components for identification and stability
Keep components in their original labeled containers with the correct lids, under the temperature and storage conditions the manufacturer specifies. Protect them from contamination and unauthorized access. Store incompatible chemicals as directed. Record purchase or opening dates if that helps you manage the product’s stated shelf life.
Inspect stored material against the manufacturer’s guidance before reuse. Changes such as crystallization or darkening need product-specific assessment; they do not justify an improvised heating procedure. After long storage, check measuring equipment and make a permitted small test batch before committing a valuable project.
Arrange disposal before starting
Keep unused resin, hardener and contaminated cleanup waste identifiable. Ask your local waste authority how it accepts these materials, and follow the SDS. US EPA guidance warns against disposing of household hazardous waste through drains, onto the ground or into storm sewers; local requirements and collection options vary.
Do not deliberately mix a large quantity of leftovers to create a solid lump for disposal. Fully cured epoxy and uncured chemicals may have different disposal routes, but solid appearance alone is not proof of an acceptable waste classification. Confirm local acceptance, particularly for business waste. Buying an appropriate quantity and retaining usable components safely can reduce waste without creating a new reaction hazard.
