Epoxy pigments and alcohol inks: test the complete recipe

Choose a supported colorant, keep additive loading controlled and separate visual effects from claims about the finished resin.

Choose the effect before the additive

Decide whether you want transparent color, an opaque field, a pearlescent swirl or a deliberately separated ink effect. Those appearances may call for different products and techniques. Start with a resin manufacturer’s supported colorants and instructions instead of choosing an additive solely because its color looks appealing in the bottle.

Define the final use at the same time. An experimental decorative casting can have a different material brief from a serving surface or an object expected to remain outdoors. Color selection does not settle heat, sunlight, cleaning or contact suitability. Keep those requirements on the project sheet while developing the visual recipe.

Check compatibility and the loading limit

Find the manufacturer’s allowed additive types, maximum loading and addition stage for the exact resin. A limit may be expressed by weight, volume or another method; copy that basis into your notes. Do not assume a percentage from another brand applies, and do not replace part of the required hardener with pigment.

ArtResin’s colorant guidance explains that additions can affect properties and product claims, including the implications of alcohol-based inks. Treat inks, liquid dyes and powder pigments as different materials, each with its own ingredients and safety guidance. A colorant marketed for resin is a reason to investigate compatibility, not proof of universal suitability.

Build a small comparison series

Prepare a few samples that vary only the colorant amount within the supported range. Use the same resin, thickness, substrate and cure conditions for each one. Label the samples with the exact resin and additive quantities, rather than descriptions such as a little blue or several drops.

Inspect the complete cured samples for color, transparency, settled material, unexpected surface changes and the required cure state. Compare them against the intended background. A color viewed in a shallow clear cup can look different in a thicker casting or over dark wood, so choose sample geometry that represents the finished piece.

Keep the chemical ratio independent

Measure resin and hardener using the published ratio and measuring method. Add color at the stage the product instructions require. If the process calls for coloring portions of an already mixed batch, account for the working time spent dividing and tinting those portions. Prepare cups and labels before the reaction begins.

Do not add solvent to thin a mixture unless the manufacturer explicitly permits it. Do not add extra hardener to compensate for a large colorant addition. If the desired effect requires an unsupported amount, change the design or consult the manufacturer rather than inventing a correction to the resin chemistry.

  • Transparent tint: evaluate the effect at the final casting thickness.
  • Opaque color: remain within the documented loading limit.
  • Powder effect: check dispersion and the appearance after complete cure.
  • Alcohol-ink effect: check the ink SDS and restrictions on heat and final use.

Separate ink effects from clear-resin claims

Alcohol inks can introduce flammable solvent and can alter the conditions behind a resin’s marketing or compliance statements. Read the ink’s SDS and do not use flame around flammable ink or solvent vapors. A bubble-removal method suitable for a plain resin may be unsuitable after an additive is introduced.

Do not describe a colored mixture as food-contact suitable just because the unmodified resin has a supporting claim. Obtain guidance for the complete recipe and intended use. Similarly, a striking color sample does not demonstrate long-term lightfastness; an outdoor design needs its own documented material and finish system.

Keep a reproducible recipe

Save one approved sample and a short record of products, quantities, measuring basis, mixing sequence, thickness and cure conditions. When a supplier changes a colorant or resin formulation, review the recipe rather than assuming the old result will repeat. This approach makes matching a set or replacing a single piece much more predictable.
