Choose the final surface before sanding
There are different reasons to abrade epoxy. You might level a casting, prepare it for another coating or polish the epoxy itself to a gloss. These routes do not necessarily end at the same abrasive grade. Decide which finish you want, then read the resin and final-coating instructions before removing material.
If another coating will be applied, its specified surface texture takes priority over a polishing sequence. If the epoxy itself will remain exposed, use a finishing process the manufacturer supports for that product. A mirror finish is a cosmetic result and does not add an unclaimed heat rating, food-contact status or outdoor service life.
Confirm cure and inspect the defect
Wait until the resin reaches the cure state required for the planned operation. Touch-dry and demold-ready do not necessarily mean ready for unrestricted sanding or service. Follow appropriate dust-control and protective measures, including the warnings for partially cured epoxy.
Inspect the surface with angled light and mark the defects in your notes or photographs. Distinguish raised nibs, shallow scratches, low spots and internal bubbles. Removing a high spot can help level a surface; sanding the surrounding area down to a deep void may remove too much resin or expose the substrate.

Use a sample or inconspicuous area to test the intended sequence. Clean away contamination as directed before abrasion. If the system can produce amine blush, follow its removal procedure first. Choose a support or sanding block that suits the desired geometry so pressure does not unintentionally round a flat surface.
Begin with the least aggressive step that can remove the relevant defect in a practical way. The right starting point depends on the surface and finish instructions, so there is no universal grit list for every casting. Keep edges and thin details under observation because they can lose material faster than the broad center.
Remove the previous scratch pattern
Progress through the abrasive sequence recommended for the chosen finish. At each stage, clean the piece and examine whether the previous scratches remain before moving finer. Moving to a polishing compound while coarse scratches are still visible can consume time without delivering the intended clarity.
Keep abrasives, pads and cloths organized so coarse debris does not contaminate a later step. If the process permits wet sanding, collect the slurry and keep water away from unsuitable electrical equipment. Wet sanding reduces airborne dust but does not make the slurry appropriate to wash into a drain.

- Preparing for a topcoat: stop at the coating manufacturer’s required texture.
- Polishing exposed epoxy: complete the supported abrasive and compound sequence.

Polish without creating a new problem
Use a compatible compound and pad system, following the equipment and resin guidance. Control pressure and avoid concentrating friction in one place. Small items require secure support and an approach that avoids catching edges. Test the method on a sample before using a powered tool on a valuable or delicate casting.
Clean the finished surface using the approved method and inspect it under more than one light angle. A residue left by a compound can hide scratches temporarily or interfere with a later coating. If recoating becomes the next step, return to that coating’s preparation instructions rather than assuming the polished surface is ready.
Keep the process repeatable
Record the starting defect, abrasive sequence, compound and observed result. Keep photographs before and after the test area. Those details help you reproduce a finish without repeatedly experimenting on the final object. Stop once the intended surface quality and documented preparation requirements are met; additional polishing can remove useful material without solving a remaining internal defect.
Locate haze before removing material
Inspect the fully cured piece with angled light and, where possible, through an edge. Surface scratches or a dull sanding pattern lie on the exterior; a waxy film may require the system’s blush-removal procedure. Cloudiness within the thickness, or bubbles below an otherwise glossy face, needs a different assessment. Moisture, contamination and microscopic trapped air are among the causes manufacturers identify.
If the location remains uncertain, send photographs and batch details to the manufacturer before sanding the entire piece. Avoid speculative heat treatments.
