Sticky or uncured epoxy: diagnose before recoating

Work through cure conditions, measurement errors and unmixed spots to decide whether to wait, remove or repair.

Pause before adding anything

Sticky epoxy is a symptom, not a single problem. The piece may be partway through its normal cure, curing slowly in unsuitable conditions, or unable to cure correctly because of a measuring or mixing error. Start by protecting the work area and avoiding direct contact with the affected surface. Do not pour hardener over it or cover it immediately with another batch.

Collect the product names, component batch details, measuring method, quantities, mixing time and temperature history. Record the pour depth and the elapsed time. These facts give technical support something useful to assess and help distinguish a process error from an assumption about the cure schedule.

Compare the right milestone

Working time, demold time and full cure time describe different stages. Check which milestone the instruction sheet promises at the stated conditions. A casting that can leave its mold may still require more time before sanding, loading or service. A cool room overnight may make the published room-temperature schedule a poor comparison.

If the ratio and mixing were correct but conditions were too cold, ask the manufacturer whether maintaining its approved cure temperature for longer is appropriate. Avoid unapproved direct heating. Additional time or warmth cannot be assumed to repair the chemical imbalance of an incorrectly proportioned batch.

Map the affected areas

If the entire pour is uniformly soft, review the overall ratio, component compatibility and temperature. If only scattered streaks or patches are wet, review mixing coverage and whether unmixed residue was transferred from the cup. These are useful clues, not proof: more than one cause can exist in the same piece.

A waxy surface film over otherwise hard epoxy can be amine blush with systems that produce it. That calls for the documented cleaning and preparation procedure. It is different from a liquid or gummy bulk layer. Do not label every tacky surface as blush simply because a water wash would be easier than removing failed resin.

  • Within the documented cure period: maintain approved conditions and reassess at the stated milestone.
  • Known ratio or component error: contact the manufacturer and plan removal of material that cannot cure.
  • Localized wet streaks: inspect mixing and cup-transfer practices before preparing the repair.
  • Hard surface with a removable film: check the system’s amine-blush guidance.

Remove failed material before rebuilding

WEST SYSTEM’s troubleshooting guidance advises removing non-curing epoxy rather than applying more material over it. Follow the specific cleanup method for your product and substrate. Protect adjacent finished areas and collect the removed material for appropriate disposal. Do not sand a gummy layer into dust or spread it into a larger contaminated area.

After removal, inspect what remains. A porous surface may require more preparation than a smooth mold, and a damaged print or delicate inclusion may not be recoverable. Ask the manufacturer how to establish a suitable bonding surface before a replacement coat. Allow any approved cleaning products to clear as directed before proceeding.

Make the replacement batch traceable

Write the exact ratio and its basis beside the scale or graduated cup. Use matching components, suitable measurement resolution and the specified mixing sequence. Prepare a small witness sample from the same properly mixed batch and label it with the pour time. It gives you a separate reference without repeatedly touching the main piece.

Keep the repaired object out of service until it meets the documented cure requirements. Cosmetic improvement alone does not establish that an underlying problem has been solved. If you cannot confidently remove the failed material or identify the cause, remaking the object or obtaining product-specific technical advice is more reliable than layering fixes.
