Start with a project brief
A useful first resin purchase begins with a small, specific project. Write down what you want to make, its dimensions, whether the resin will coat a surface or fill a mold, and where the finished object will be used. A clear coating on a wooden panel asks different things of a resin than a thick flower block. The word clear on both bottles does not make them interchangeable.
Choose a first project that allows a practice sample and does not contain an irreplaceable object. A small decorative panel or shallow mold offers a manageable way to learn measuring and surface preparation. A large table adds leak control, lifting, heat management and expensive material commitments at the same time.
Match the product to the geometry
Manufacturers distinguish coating, casting and other epoxy systems for a reason. Use their stated applications and technical data to build a shortlist. Check the permitted layer thickness, casting volume and temperature together. A maximum depth quoted for a small casting is not automatic approval for a wide table of that depth.
Ask the manufacturer when a project sits between categories. Some casting formulations cure very slowly in small or thin pours; EcoPoxy discusses this limitation in its support guidance. A longer advertised working time can therefore be a disadvantage for a shallow project with a deadline.
- Thin decorative surface: look for a coating system whose application thickness fits your design.
- Molded object: look for a casting system approved for the mold depth and total volume.
- Bonding or repair: use specifications for the substrate and required service, rather than choosing solely for optical clarity.

Find the current instructions, technical data sheet and safety data sheets for both components. Save their names or revision dates with your project notes. Look for a stated measuring method, mixing instructions, working temperature, demold or handling time, full cure conditions and recoat procedure. If these details are missing, you do not yet have enough information to plan the job.
A product with simple instructions and reachable technical support may be easier to use than one advertised with a familiar ratio but little supporting information. There is no universal epoxy mix ratio, and a ratio by volume cannot automatically be used on a scale.
Compare the whole project cost
Calculate the total mixed quantity you need, then include separate allowances for test pieces, seal coats and expected edge runoff. Compare what each kit actually contains: some listings emphasize resin quantity while others describe the combined kit. Keep cups, protective equipment, mold materials and finishing supplies in the budget.
Buying a larger kit only helps if the remaining material can be stored and used within the manufacturer’s guidance. For a first attempt, consider the cost of one practice batch and one final batch together. This makes the value of a smaller, documented system easier to judge.
Set realistic expectations for the finished piece
Check restrictions that matter to its intended use: sunlight, hot drinkware, cleaning, skin contact and food contact. UV resistance does not promise permanent color stability. A cured clear surface is not proof of suitability for food preparation. Any claimed compliance applies to the particular product and stated conditions, not to every pigment or finished object made with it.
Before the main pour, make a sample using the same substrate, colorant and thickness. Record appearance, cure schedule and any surface defects. This is a compatibility check and a rehearsal; it does not certify durability or safety for uses outside the product documentation.
Set up your first pour in order
Gather matching resin and hardener, the current instructions, suitable graduated cups or a sufficiently precise scale, mixing sticks, a timer, thermometer, level, prepared mold or substrate, surface protection and cleanup supplies. Have the gloves, eye protection and ventilation specified for your materials in place before opening the bottles. Keep a small practice sample in the plan.
- 1. Prepare and level the mold or substrate; complete any required sealing or release steps.
- 2. Confirm material and room conditions, calculate a permitted batch, and write both component targets with units and ratio basis.
- 3. Measure and mix for the exact product’s prescribed time and scraping sequence; add only supported colorants as directed.
- 4. Apply within the working period and approved layer limits, then protect the piece from disturbance and dust.
- 5. Record the pour time and conditions, manage cleanup waste, and wait for the specified handling and full-cure milestones.
